New Release & Interview: The Perfect Gift by Joe Cosentino

AN INTERVIEW WITH JOE COSENTINO, AUTHOR OF THE PERFECT GIFT,
(Bobby and Paolo Holiday Stories, Book 2)
PUBLISHED BY DREAMSPINNER PRESS

  1. When did you start writing?

My first recollection of storytelling is when my older sister and cousin wrapped a sheet around me in my cousin’s garage, placed me in a garbage can full of yellow paper strips, and we performed a Nativity scene for unsuspecting family members and friends. When I realized that I was the star, the theatre bug bit me. That led to full theatrical musical productions in a neighbor’s garage. To this day when I enter a garage, I start singing and dancing. Ultimately, I majored in theatre at college, and became a professional actor, working in film, television, and theatre opposite stars like Rosie O’Donnell (AT&T industrial), Nathan Lane (Roar of the Greasepaint onstage), Bruce Willis (A Midsummer Night’s Dream onstage), Charles Keating (NBC’s Another World), Jason Robards (Commercial Credit computer commercial), and Holland Taylor (ABC’s My Mother Was Never a Kid TV movie). Moving on to playwriting and ultimately writing novels came next. Along the way, I received two master’s degrees and became a college professor/department head, though like Bobby’s mother in my short story, my mother keeps asking me when I’m going to make as much money as my sister the accountant.

  1. What are the rules for writing a good romance story?

Fall in love with your characters as they fall in love with each other. If you do, the readers will as well. And don’t forget the setting. Let it be as romantic as possible. Finally, a little humor and mystery never hurt any story.

  1. What is your writing process?

I generally wake up at 3am with a great idea. The next day, if I can read the notes on my night table, I write a brief outline and biography for each character. Next, as in my acting days, I ask myself questions about each character and their journey. What are they thinking and feeling? What do they want? What is standing in the way of them getting what they want? Then I get them talking to one another and the magic happens. My spouse reads my second draft and gives me some feedback. After we argue, my third draft goes to the publisher.

  1. We are here today to talk about your holiday novella, The Perfect Gift, Bobby and Paolo Holiday Stories Book 2, published by Dreamspinner Press. Tell us about the story and setting, and how you came up with them.

Dreamspinner Press published A Home for the Holidays, Bobby and Paolo Holiday Stories Book 1, my short novella loosely based on my trip to the magical and gorgeous island of Capri. Bobby, a young, Italian American law student traveling to Capri during the winter holidays to meet his quaint Italian relatives, falls in love with his handsome, muscular, sexy Italian distant cousin, Paolo. Since I come from a long line of funny Italian Americans, I included a good deal of humor in the story as well with Paolo’s eccentric family. Readers, reviewers, and listeners to the audiobook performed by the spicy Joel Leslie called it the perfect holiday gift, feeling as if they had taken a trip to Capri for the romance of a lifetime. Since A Home for the Holidays leaves open the future of Bobby’s and Paolo’s relationship; Joel, readers, reviewers, and some Dreamspinner Press staff asked me why I hadn’t written a sequel. When I couldn’t come up with a reason, I got to work.
In The Perfect Gift, Bobby and Paolo Holiday Stories Book 2, Bobby (a junior lawyer) and Paolo (a junior fashion designer) have lived together in their quaint Victorian-era apartment for a year. Bobby wants marriage, but Paolo is hesitant. After enjoying the winter holiday attractions of Philly, Paolo proposes and Bobby is ecstatic. Bobby isn’t the only one who is excited. His mother and sister begin planning “Operation Bobby and Paolo,” a wedding that would make the royal family jealous. Bobby’s best friend and the pastor of their open and affirming church join in the wedding hysteria. The problem is that Bobby and Paolo have their hearts set on a small, intimate wedding. After some comical and heart-wrenching story twists and turns, Bobby and Paolo come up with the perfect solution and become “December Grooms.”
The following Christmas, the couple tour many of the quaint and wonderful holiday sites in the area featuring elaborately decorated trees and wreathes, Dickensian villages, Victorian carolers and bell ringers, vendors selling hot mulled cider and roasted chestnuts, and bay-windowed shops. They exchange beautiful gifts, and enjoy spending Christmas with Bobby’s eccentric family. However, something is missing in their lives. There’s an emptiness and a longing neither of them can explain. While playing department store Santa, Bobby’s father suffers a heart attack. A man in a Santa suit, who Bobby assumes is his father’s replacement, brings the young couple to the hospital room of a sick little boy. Could this boy be “An Unexpected Gift” leading to happily ever after for Bobby and Paolo? You’ll have to read the story to find out.

  1. Tell us about your main characters.

Bobby is twenty-five with long auburn hair, emerald eyes, and a swimmer’s build. He has my sensibility and sense of humor. Like Harold in my An Infatuation and Jonathan in my A Shooting Star, Bobby is sweet, sensitive, and smart. As a junior lawyer who has just passed his bar exam, he is passionate about LGBT equality. He is also passionately in love with his husband Paolo.
Paolo is loosely based on my cousin’s cousin who lives in Italy. Like Mario in An Infatuation and David in A Shooting Star, Paolo is handsome, muscular, and charismatic with wavy chestnut hair and sapphire eyes. He is also a gifted junior fashion designer who is very much in love with Bobby. In book two, Paolo has transformed from a party boy to a committed husband.
Bobby’s parents are loosely based on mine. They are hysterically funny, and love their son dearly.
Geoffrey, the sick boy who approaches Bobby and Paolo is adorable, a bit cocky, and so in need of love. He is a combination of many neglected children I’ve met through a friend who is a social worker.
Jared, Bobby’s best friend and colleague, is a laugh riot, but he is quite devoted to Bobby.

  1. What about The Perfect Gift makes it different from other MM holiday novellas?

Bobby and Paolo’s love for each other, the wonderful winter holiday locations, the humor, the mystical element in the story, a gay wedding, and the happily ever after ending make the story a terrific read. Also, I think everyone can relate to feeling that something is missing during the holiday season, and hoping for that perfect holiday gift.

  1. Bobby and Paolo are distant cousins. Might that ruffle some feathers?

As Bobby’s mom says in the story, it is not unusual for distant cousins to couple in Italy. Actually, this was the case with my great uncle and great aunt who were married for sixty years until their deaths. Since a year has gone by since we last saw Bobby and Paolo, they have matured as people and as a couple.

  1. Will there be a part three for Paolo and Bobby?

I’m writing it now.

  1. What other books have you written?

My Nicky and Noah comedy mystery series features Drama Queen (Divine Magazine’s Readers’ Choice Award for Favorite LGBT Mystery, Humorous, and Contemporary novel of 2015), Drama Muscle (Rainbow Award Honorable Mention), Drama Cruise, Drama Luau, Drama Detective. In each novel, dead bodies drop like hammy actors at a curtain call as college theatre professors and lovers Nicky and Noah use their theatre skills, including impersonating others, in hysterically funny antics to figure out whodunit and why.
My Jana Lane mystery series from The Wild Rose Press includes Paper Doll, Porcelain Doll, Satin Doll, China Doll, and Rag Doll. Set in the 1980’s, ex-child star and current comeback actress Jana Lane solves mysteries on her movie, television, and stage sets with the help of her gay best friend and gay agent while fundraising for her AIDS foundation.
Finally, my Cozzi Cove beach series from NineStar Press is set in a gay resort on the New Jersey shore owned by ex-football player, handsome Cal Cozzi. Each novel provides an entryway into Cal’s life and the lives of the various residents staying in Cal’s bungalows each summer. They include Cozzi Cove: Bouncing Back (Rainbow Award Honorable Mention/TBR Pile Favorite Book of the Month), Cozzi Cove: Moving Forward, Cozzi Cove: Stepping Out, and Cozzi Cove: New Beginnings. I love the mystical element in each book.

  1. As a college professor/department head, where do you find the time to write so many books?

I write at night after my spouse has gone to sleep and the house is quiet. As my mother would say, I’ve always had a strong imagination. So it’s not difficult for me to connect to my inner muse and let the characters out. Being a bit tired helps release my inhibitions and creativity.

Like Bobby and Paolo in my stories, I hope everyone reading this gets just what you need this holiday season. Enjoy my special holiday gift to you. Please know that it comes wrapped in a huge ribbon of love. And I love hearing from readers. You can contact me at: http://www.JoeCosentino.weebly.com.

I adore the character of Bobby…the heartwarming family moments…the love the author has for Capri and the people there flows off the page in every word he has written…..When you finish reading this story, you will want to book your own flight to Italy and boat to Capri.” Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words

The one thing you can't escape when reading Cosentino's books is his humour; it's what draws me back time and again to this author. Sometimes the humour is subtle, sometimes it's unashamedly overt - every time it is hilarious.” Boy Meets Boy Reviews

Excerpt of The Perfect Gift (Bobby and Paolo Holiday Stories, Book 2)
by Joe Cosentino, published by Dreamspinner Press:

Hi, Mom. What are you doing?”

Sitting home alone like a dog.”

That’s Mom’s logic. If their house isn’t full of people eating and carrying on, she’s alone.

Where’s Dad?”

In his den, watching the game on TV as usual.”

I’m Bobby McGrath. Since this is my story, I should tell you more about myself. I have frizzy red hair, green eyes, and a swimmer’s body, thanks to the pool at my gym. The swimmer’s body is thanks to the pool. The red hair and green eyes are courtesy of my dad’s side of the family,
which my mom calls the Bad Seed. And I passed the bar. I don’t mean I’m a recovering alcoholic. I aced my bar exam, and I’ve been a junior lawyer for nearly a year now.

Bobby, are you listening to me or thinking about one of your cases?”

I’m listening, Mom.” I sat on the window seat in my Victorian apartment’s turret and gazed out at the carolers appropriately dressed in Victorian garb as they sang in front of the department store across the street. That’s the department store where my father is manager and plays Santa every December. “How did Dad’s physical go with Dr. Sherman?”

“He said Dad’s overweight. Like we didn’t know. For that we shelled out a thirty-dollar co-pay.”

Did you mention how Dad’s been forgetting a few things lately?”

I told him how your father forgot to take out the garbage, sweep out the garage, and chase the squirrels out of our summerhouse in the backyard.”

I couldn’t help thinking Dad’s memory lapses were intentional.

Dr. Sherman asked Dad some questions, like Dad’s birthdate and our anniversary.”

And?”

Your father never remembers things like that, so I answered for him.”

Mom, you shouldn’t have—”

Your father’s fine, except for an enlarged prostrate.”

That’s prostate.”

Don’t correct your mother, especially now.”

What’s wrong?”

You know I don’t like to burden you with my problems.”

All right. I should get on my laptop to do some research for a—”

I’m worried about your sister.”

Which one?”

Both of them.”

I took a sip of Lemon Zinger tea and braced myself for a long story.

They work so hard at their jobs and taking care of the kids, they never see their husbands.”

My sisters’ know-it-all spouses? “Is that a bad thing?”

Watch your mouth, mister. I’m your mother. In my day we never disrespected our parents, no matter how wrong they were about everything. And we never took drugs.”

I don’t take drugs, Mom; neither does Paolo.”

But plenty of young people today are drug addicts, Bobby. They say they’re nervous. If young people are nervous, they should do what I do, and take a Prozac.”

As Mom rambled on about the sad state of our youth, I glanced over at the antique cherry coffee table to a framed picture of Paolo and me smiling in front of the Mascobello villa in Capri, Italy. That’s where I met Paolo, when I visited my extended family. Don’t freak out. Paolo is a very
distant cousin. He has dreamy sapphire eyes, wavy chestnut hair, more muscles than a daytime television star, and a little-boy pout that makes me want to take care of him for the rest of his life. Which I do. Since Paolo was quite the playboy in Capri, I had my doubts about our relationship. But we’ve been living in boyfriend bliss here in Philadelphia, the City of Brotherly Love, for a year now.

Author Interview: Otter Chaos by P.D. Singer

About the author:

P.D. Singer lives in Colorado with her slightly bemused husband, two rowdy teenage boys, and thirty pounds of cats. She’s a big believer in research, first-hand if possible, so the reader can be quite certain Pam has skied down a mountain face-first, been stepped on by rodeo horses, acquired a potato burn or two, and will never, ever, write a novel that includes sky-diving.

When not writing, playing her fiddle, or skiing, she can be found with a book in hand.

Do you plan everything or just let the story flow?

I do a small amount of outlining: I have to know the starting point, the ending point, and a couple of high points in between. The rest of the journey comes as a surprise. The story has to flow, because I’m Linear Girl, and write everything in order. And I may chuck some of the high points if I decide they no longer fit.

Do your characters ever want to take over the story?

It wonderful when they do: it means they’ve come to life in my head. Lon, my otter shifter, is already chafing for new adventures, and he completely reworked the direction of his last book.

What drew you to the M/M genre in particular?

As so many of us do, I had a family member who complained of never finding books about people like himself. I also like that the power dynamics don’t have 4000 years of patriarchy to skew perceptions.

Where do you dream of travelling to and why?

I did a concert tour when I was seventeen, one of those “if it’s Tuesday, this must be Belgium” whirlwinds. We came into a major European city, rehearsed, played a concert, lingered a day or two to sightsee, rinse and repeat from London to Rome. After vowing to revisit these fascinating cities and get a really good look, I still need to spend a week, or two, or three, because of course one must get out of the city and into the countryside, in Venice, Florence, and Rome.

Do distant places feature in your books?

Much of my work takes place in Colorado, sometimes in Boulder, sometimes in the mountains. I sent poor Gary (Return to the Mountain) to New York City, where he had small-town-itis, as in “never been in a building with more than three floors”. Ricky from The Rare Event took mercy on him while he was there. Donal agus Jimmy took place in Belfast in 1912, where I set the title characters to building the Titanic. Jude, from Prep Work, travels the world eating local cuisines, but has learned to call London home. Half of Spokes takes place in Boulder, half in Italy.

Do you listen to music while writing?

My husband seems to have a problem with silence, so the radio or TV is often going, but I try not to listen to it. It’s distracting and I start typing lyrics.

Could you tell us a bit about your latest release?

Otter Chaos is a two-pack with Tail Slide, because not everyone has seen the short story that brought Lon and Corey together. Tail Slide started in the Out In Colorado anthology and became a standalone after that, but the characters had more adventures coming. Lon is an otter shifter and his lover Corey is a professor of economics. You might recall ECO 101 as less than exciting, but Corey has a werewolf for a department head. Nothing like conflicting interests over Lon’s job, Corey’s job, and Lon’s otterness when your opponent has fangs and buddies with fangs.

Lon as an otter was a ton of fun, because while otters are adorable, they get into everything and make you go Aw! while they trash your house. Lon tries not to wear his fur indoors for this very reason. Even outside, his otter nature sometimes plucks Corey’s nerves.

Otter Video:

On the other hand, for some kinds of investigations, a very smart, slippery, twenty-five pound accomplice is exactly what Corey needs.

Otter Chaos is currently on preorder at a jaw-dropping 99 cents or near local equivalent at Amazon, Kobo, Apple, and All Romance eBooks, and will be available to read on October 9.

What have you learned about writing and publishing since you first started?

Since I came out of science writing, I had to master a different style. Yes, it may be efficient to write one paragraph on the merits of bear boxes, but it’s much better storytelling to show a bear getting into the food because the box wasn’t latched correctly.

Anything you would say to those just starting out in the craft?

Read widely, in every genre. It fosters plot bunnies and widens your horizons, besides giving you a look at different styles. If something grabs you by the throat and makes you finish it right now, figure out what made you react that way. Don’t try to write exactly the same, but fold that knowledge into your own arsenal of skills.

Blurb of your latest release or coming soon book

Otter Chaos (includes Tail Slide)

Lon Ewing snowboarded in and turned economist Corey Levigne’s life upside down, introducing him to a brand new world. Corey’s still adjusting to a boyfriend who shifts into an otter and raids the koi pond—and now Lon says Corey’s department chair is a werewolf?

Wolves at the university, wolves in the bank—across Lon’s desk sits Professor Melvin Vadas and his hench-wolves, demanding a construction loan for the pack’s new lodge in the mountains. There’s just one little problem: the proposed building site is home to a breeding population of rare fish.

What do wolves care for stupid human rules, an otter who’d barely make a good snack, or one pesky man determined to protect the environment? Once they’re snout to snout with Corey and Lon there’s more than silverscale dace on the Endangered Species list.

Tail Slide (the short that kicked off otter madness)

Fresh powder snow and running water in the Colorado back country call Lon like the moon calls the wolves. Belly-sliding to a good time on the weekends makes up for a workweek at a desk, and meeting Corey adds a whole new level of fun to snowboarding.

It’s easy to slip away for time alone in the woods without raising suspicion, but how’s Lon to entertain himself when bad snow and a worse spill force them off the mountain too early?

Never give an otter a box of Cheerios.

Interview:

Do you plan everything or just let the story flow?

I am trying to be better about planning stuff, but I prefer to let the story go where it wants to go.

Do your characters ever want to take over the story? I have a character who was introduced in the first book in an offhand comment. Later in the book, I decided to bring him in for a scene. In Moon Born, he managed to wedge himself firmly into my MC's lives. Now he's demanding his own book. So yeah...

What drew you to the M/M genre in particular? The M/M genre has a lot of un-mined potential right now. With the rapid evolution of our society on equal rights for GLBT folk, there are many new angles to write and topics to discuss.

Also, you know, hot men in bed together...

Do you write in other genres besides M/M?

I started off writing Fantasy novels and in some mythical future where I have time and focus I mean to get back to that. There is a story on the horizon that will either go het or lesbian, I haven't worked it out yet.

What is your favourite food?

I'd probably have to go with pizza. Because even mediocre pizza is better than a lot of other things.

Are you a morning person or a night owl?

I'm such a night owl that it becomes morning, so maybe I'm both.

Where do you dream of travelling to and why?

I want to go to the old cities, like Paris and London. I love history.

Do distant places feature in your books?

Yes. My paranormal books mostly focus on the New York area, which is across the country from me.

However, the one I'm working on now will feature Ireland and Spain.

Do you listen to music while writing?

Sometimes. I feel like I have to in order to appease my inner teenager. However, the truth is, when I'm in the zone I'm happier working in silence.

Could you tell us a bit about your latest release?

Moon Born is the sequel to Love Bites. It continues the story of Tucker and Ryder, straight best friends who became mated werewolves. Though, as this is a British site, maybe I should say they're straight best mates who become mated mates. Or is that confusing?

In Moon Born, the ramifications of being lycans really hit them and they have to find their place in the world. Even though magic and paranormal creatures are just a part of everyday life in this world I have created, werewolves were hunted to extinction because they were a threat to people. So, no one is really thrilled to have them back.

In addition to those problem, there is a new threat they have to deal with. A monster is stalking the citizens of NYC and they find themselves drawn into that conflict.

What have you learned about writing and publishing since you first started?

Apparently, adverbs are bad. When I started writing, back in the Bronze Age, everything I read had sentences like, "Of course I'd love to go on a dangerous quest," he said excitedly.

So that's how I learned to write. Apparently, things changed in the last couple of decades. I've been yelled at by pretty much everyone to knock that off. So I finally complied—bitterly.

Is there anything you would do differently?

With Moon Born? No, I took the time (way too much time) to be sure I got it right. There are things that may not fly with people, but I'm pretty happy with it. Give it a few months and I'm sure I'll hate something about it. That's always the way.

Who, or what, if anything has influenced your writing?

I am a disciple of Joss Whedon. I love his sense of humor. I think he is a genius. The way he can have you laughing one minute then weeping the next just awes me. I try to bring that into my writing, defeating expectations, turning tired tropes on their ears.

Anything you would say to those just starting out in the craft?

Don't try to write what you think people want to see. That will just drive you crazy. Write what you love. That passion will shine through. Readers will respond to that.

And don't be put off by negative feedback. Learn from it, if you can, and keep in mind that some people will hate your book for the same reason someone else loves it.

What are three words that describe you?

Curmudgeon. Sarcastic. Creative.

What's your favourite book or who is your favourite writer?

That's an impossible question. As far as paranormal M/M books go, I have to say the one I liked the most so far are the Section 13 books by J.L. O'Faolain. His MC Cole is a hilariously bitchy Sidhe who kicks total ass.

A Bittersweet Dreams title: It's an unfortunate truth: love doesn't always conquer all. Regardless of its strength, sometimes fate intervenes, tragedy strikes, or forces conspire against it. These stories of romance do not offer a traditional happy ending, but the strong and enduring love will still touch your heart and maybe move you to tears.

Interview:

Do you plan everything or just let the story flow?

When writing a mystery like my Jana Lane mysteries (PAPER DOLL from Whiskey Creek Press) or Nicky and Noah mysteries (DRAMA QUEEN from Lethe Press), I start at the end with a shocking ending then work backwards with clues, reversals, plot twists and turns. With a romance novel like AN INFATUATION or A SHOOTING STAR (from Dreamspinner Press) I start with the characters and do lengthy character biographies. That helps mold the story for me. In both cases I write a brief outline. My spouse reads the second draft, and the third draft goes to the publisher.

Do your characters ever want to take over the story?

Yes! Since I was an actor, I have a great imagination. Once the characters begin talking in my head, I start typing. They very often divert from my outline, which is fine with me. Sometimes the things they say make me laugh, cry, or totally shock me.

What drew you to the M/M genre in particular?

Go to the mall and look at the endless posters of movies with no gay characters in them. There are so many interesting gay stories that need to be told. I have a dozen of them in my head now.

Do you write in other genres besides M/M?

I have a mystery series, the Jana Lane mysteries, with straight leading characters and gay supporting characters. It’s about an ex-child star making a comeback while solving the mystery of who attacked her in the past and who is after her now. PAPER DOLL (Whiskey Creek Presss) is out now. PORCELAIN DOLL, SATIN DOLL, and CHINA DOLL (Wild Rose Press) will be out in the future. Through the course of the books, Jana not only solves the mysteries, but also reclaims the courage and fortitude she had as a child. This is an important message for all of us. As one reviewer wrote, she starts out as a wounded bird, and ends as tiger. Since the novels take place in the 1980’s, Jana’s best friends are gay, and Jana is somewhat of a gay activist, the AIDS epidemic is a large part of the novels.

What is your favourite food?

Oatmeal with raisins, walnuts, pumpkin seeds, coconut milk, and cinnamon.

Are you a morning person or a night owl?

Definitely a night owl, which drives my spouse (a morning person) crazy.

Where do you dream of travelling to and why?

We’ve been to France, Ireland, Scotland, England, Spain, and most of the US, where I live. I’d like to take a riverboat cruise through Austria and sing the songs from THE SOUND OF MUSIC at the sites.

Do distant places feature in your books?

I travelled to gorgeous Capri, Italy for my upcoming holiday novella, A HOME FOR THE HOLIDAYS from Dreamspinner Press. I also took an Alaskan cruise and trip to Hawaii for the upcoming third and fourth Nicky and Noah mysteries, DRAMA CRUISE and DRAMA ALOHA from Lethe Press. Jana goes to Hollywood in PAPER DOLL (Whiskey Creek Press) and Washington, DC in SATIN DOLL (Wild Rose Press).

Do you listen to music while writing?

No, just the voices in my head.

Could you tell us a bit about your latest release?

After my Bittersweet Dreams novella, AN INFATUATION, was released by Dreamspinner Press, I received numerous requests from readers for a second novella in the In My Heart series. Since AN INFATUATION was loosely based on my high school days through adulthood, I thought back to my days as a theatre major in college, and A SHOTING STAR was born.

In the novella, new college theatre major Jonathan meets the gorgeous, muscular, tantalizing, and mysterious upper classroom and theatre department star aptly named David Star. As David grooms Jonathan for college life and for stardom, Jonathan falls deeply in love with him. This leads Jonathan on an inner and outer journey, where he learns some shocking secrets about David, and about himself. As a remembrance story, the novella begins with Jonathan having just received the Academy Award for Best Actor in a Film, as he thinks back to the person who was responsible for his win.

What have you learned about writing and publishing since you first started?

I’ve learned to write what is in my heart, and connect to the publisher who understands that.

Is there anything you would do differently?

Not worry so much about reviews. Most of my reviews and reader response have been incredibly positive, which fuel my writing. What a gift it is for a reader to post a positive review on Amazon or Goodreads, relating how something I’ve written has moved them, made them laugh, made them cry, think about something new, or changed their life. I can’t think of anything better. As for the few bad reviews, I don’t read them. As my mother always told me, if you don’t have something nice to say about somebody, don’t say anything. I can’t imagine why anyone would continue reading a book after chapter one if he/she doesn’t like it. Just put it down and read something else. Why attack a book someone has poured his/her blood, sweat, and tears into? As the saying goes, just say no.

Who, or what, if anything has influenced your writing?

Armistead Maupin has an amazing flair for writing eccentric, loveable characters with engaging and realistic dialogue. Agatha Christie is the master of hiding clues, reversals, plot twists and turns, and surprise endings.

Anything you would say to those just starting out in the craft?

Write what is in your heart and search for the publisher who fits your style.

What are three words that describe you?

Funny, talkative, honest.

What's your favourite book or who is your favourite writer?

Armistead Maupin’s TALES OF THE CITY books are amazing. I read them over and over again.

List of previous books if any:

AN INFATUATION (In My Heart bittersweet dreams novella 1 from Dreamspinner Press, PAPER DOLL (the first Jana Lane mystery from Whiskey Creek Press), DRAMA QUEEN (the first Nicky and Noah mystery from Lethe Press).

I will be editing for release: A HOME FOR THE HOLIDAYS (a winter holiday novella taking place in Capri, Italy) from Dreamsprinner Press, THE NAKED PRINCE AND OTHER TAKES FROM FAIRYLAND (gay fairy tales novella) from Dreamspinner Press, PORCELAIN DOLL (the second Jana Lane mystery) and SATIN DOLL (the third Jana Lane mystery) from Wild Rose Press, DRAMA MUSCLE (the second Nicky and Noah comedy mystery) and DRAMA CRUISE (the third Nicky and Noah mystery) from Lethe Press. I plan to finish writing CHINA DOLL (the fourth Jana Lane mystery) and DRAMA ALOHA (the fourth Nicky and Noah mystery. Looks like I’ll be really busy. I am also working on a new gay romance novel set in the Jersey Shore, COZZI COVE: BOUNCING BACK which features two minor characters from AN INFATUATION.

Author Interview: Joe Cosentino

About the Author:

Joe Cosentino is the author of Drama Queen the first Nicky and Noah mystery (Lethe Press), An Infatuation (Dreamspinner Press), Paper Doll the first Jana Lane mystery (Whiskey Creek Press), and The Nutcracker and the Mouse King (Eldridge Plays and Musicals). He has appeared in principal acting roles in film, television, and theatre, opposite stars such as Bruce Willis, Rosie O’Donnell, Nathan Lane, Holland Taylor, and Jason Robards. His one-act plays, Infatuation and Neighbor, were performed in New York City. He wrote The Perils of Pauline educational film (Prentice Hall Publishers). Joe is currently Head of the Department/Professor at a college in upstate New York, and is happily married. His upcoming novels are Drama Muscle the second Nicky and Noah mystery (Lethe Press), A Shooting Star (Dreamspinner Press novella), A Home for the Holidays (Dreamspinner Press holiday novella), and Porcelain Doll the second Jana Lane mystery.

Do you plan everything or just let the story flow?

Since I was a professional actor, I have quite an imagination. So I leave a pad and pen on my night table. During the night I wake up and write down enough ideas to fill a library of books. After I select the idea to work on next, I write a character biography for each character. That leads to the outline and eventually a first and second draft. After my spouse reads the second draft, I do a third draft, which goes to the publisher.

Do your characters ever want to take over the story?

Constantly. Once they start talking to one another, I often have to deviate from the outline. Since I have a great deal of improvisational training as an actor, this is fine with me.

What drew you to the M/M genre in particular?

There are so many untold gay stories. Just look at the endless array of movie posters in the malls with no gay characters represented. Also, like most writers, I use a great deal of content from my own life in my writing.

Do you write in other genres besides M/M?

Yes, I have a straight mystery series (with gay supporting characters), the Jana Lane mysteries, about an ex-child star solving murders. The first novel is out now, PAPER DOLL (Whiskey Creek Press). I believe the next one, PORCELAIN DOLL (where Jana solves a murder while making a comeback film), will be published soon. I couldn’t resist making Jana’s agent, best friend, and greatest fan gay.

What is your favourite food?

Oatmeal with raisins, banana, walnuts, and cinnamon.

Are you a morning person or a night owl?

Definitely a night owl. Since I am a college professor/department head (like Martin Anderson in DRAMA QUEEN, the first Nicky and Noah mystery), I am busy during the day. My writing time is at night after my spouse goes to sleep.

Where do you dream of travelling to and why?

I’ve already been through most of the US, including Alaska and Hawaii, as well as to six countries in Europe. I’d like to take a river boat cruise through Austria, once they have same-sex civil marriage equality.

Do distant places feature in your books?

AN INFATUATION, my MM bittersweet dreams novella from Dreamspinner Press, takes place in New York and New Jersey, since those are my roots. DRAMA QUEEN, the first Nicky and Noah mystery novel from Lethe Press, takes place in a fictitious Edwardian-style college community in New England. My fall release MM bittersweet dreams romance novella from Dreamspinner Press, A SHOOTING STAR, takes place in Colorado. My upcoming holiday romance novella from Dreamspinner Press, A HOME FOR THE HOLIDAYS, takes place in Capri, Italy, one of my favorite vacation spots.

Do you listen to music while writing?

No, I need absolute silence to be with my characters.

Could you tell us a bit about your latest release?

My latest MM romance novella is AN INFATUATION from Dreamspinner Press. Happily married Harold attends his ten-year high reunion and finds Mario, his high school crush, may be ready to deal with his own sexuality. The flashbacks from high school are hysterically funny, and the resolution is quite dramatic yet fulfilling. It began as a one-act play, which I expanded and morphed into a novella. While the situation is fictitious, Harold is based on me. Harold’s devotion to his spouse, Stuart, is admirable, as is his honesty about his teenage infatuation with Mario. I love that the story spans twenty years so we see Harold (and Mario) develop and mature. Readers tell me they laugh and cry at this novella, and fall in love with Harold and Mario. Since it released in February, I am very happy with the response. Many readers have asked for a sequel. While that isn’t in the offering, my next MM bittersweet dreams romance novella from Dreamspinner Press, A SHOOTING STAR, is another remembrance novella with humor.

My latest MM release is DRAMA QUEEN, the first Nicky and Noah mystery comedy from Lethe Press. It is funny, theatrical, sexy, wild, and wacky with a solid mystery full of plot twists and turns at its center. Nicky and Noah have to uncover why college theatre professors are dropping like stage curtains while Nicky directs the college play production—a murder mystery. In DRAMA MUSCLE (coming), Nicky and Noah have to find out why musclemen are dropping like weights in the Physical Education department while Nicky directs the Student Bodybuilding Competition. In DRAMA CRUISE, Nicky and Noah go on a cruise to Alaska, and discover why college theatre professors are going overboard like lifeboats while Nicky directs a murder mystery dinner theatre show onboard ship.

What have you learned about writing and publishing since you first started?

It doesn’t end after the book is released. There is promotion to do!

Is there anything you would do differently?

I wouldn’t worry about reader response and reviews. Thankfully they have for the most part been incredibly positive.

Who, or what, if anything has influenced your writing?

I’ve read many MM writers like Jeff Erno and Armistead Maupin. I like Jeff’s sincere and likeable characters, and Armistead’s zany and unexpected plot twists. I’ve read every Agatha Christie novel and play many times. She is a genius at outlining when and where to give the reader what information. I love the inversion in her books, where she uses sleight of hand to lay out all the information, but not in a straight forward manner. The reader becomes the sleuth to put all the pieces of the puzzle together.

Anything you would say to those just starting out in the craft?

Write what tickles your fancy, and don’t worry about selling it. That will come later.

What are three words that describe you?

Funny, thoughtful, and chatty.

What's your favourite book or who is your favourite writer?

Armistead Maupin’s Tales of the City books.

Six Authors/Six Days Interview & Giveaway Debbie McGowan

About the Author:

Debbie McGowan is an author and publisher based in a semi-rural corner of Lancashire, England. She writes character-driven fiction, covering life, love, relationships—the whole shazam. A working class girl, she ‘ran away’ to London at seventeen, was homeless, unemployed and then homeless again, interspersed with animal rights activism (all legal, honest ;)) and volunteer work as a mental health advocate. At twenty-five, she went back to college to study social science—tough with two toddlers, but they had a ‘stay at home’ dad, so it worked itself out. These days, the toddlers are young women (much to their chagrin), and Debbie teaches undergraduate students, writes novels and runs an independent publishing company, occasionally grabbing an hour of sleep where she can!

Do you plan everything or just let the story flow?

I rarely plan out my stories, usually just going with the flow, especially at the start, where I might have a vague idea of where the story is heading, but prefer to go where it takes me. It can be quite hairy at times. For instance, when I was writing ”A Midnight Clear”, the homeless girl (main character) finds a stray cat, and all the while I was writing the story, I was thinking, please let the cat be OK. I genuinely have no (conscious) idea what’s going to happen.

Do your characters ever want to take over the story?

My characters always take over the story! I let them too – eventually. When I’m working with new characters it takes me a while to reach a point where I trust them enough, but once I let them hold the reins they take the story to amazing places. It actually feels a lot like the experience of reading a story written by someone else.

What drew you to the M/M genre in particular?

I love a bit of romance, but I don’t think much like a woman, so I tend to identify more with men in general, and gay men in particular. A lot of my friends are gay men, so perhaps it’s a little bit about writing what I know.

Do you write in other genres besides M/M?

I do, and in fact I don’t consider the M/M I write as distinct from the rest of it. I write realist contemporary fiction, which incorporates same and opposite gender relationships, both male and female, but also everything else – a bit of crime, the supernatural, family, growing up, etc.

What is your favourite food?

Cheese. I love it. All of it. Well, all except the dodgy grated parmesan that’s sold in pots off the shelf. My favourite cheese is Swiss Emmental, which is nutty and quite tangy, yet sweet and smooth. It has holes in it like cartoon cheese. Fun and delicious!

Are you a morning person or a night owl?

Oh, I am definitely a morning person, but I tend to burn the candle at both ends. My real low point is mid–late afternoon, when I get hardly anything done. Coffee is my saviour.

Where do you dream of travelling to and why?

I’m very much a home body, but if I did venture out I’d really loved to travel the US and meet up with all the amazing authors I know whom I have only met online – we have a whole road trip planned out based on where they live. 

Do distant places feature in your books?

Occasionally I send my characters of to distant places. I had two characters go to Nepal to deliver a catering ovens to a remote Himalayan village. I also have a few characters who have made the trans-Atlantic migration (both ways), plus characters who are non-UK (most of my stories are based in the UK) and moved to England prior to the start of the story.

Do you listen to music while writing?

No, as I can’t, which is a bummer, as I have permanent tinnitus and sometimes it is so loud I can’t concentrate. That said, my novels In The Stars Part I and In The Stars Part II have many chapters based on songs, where I tried to capture the story, or the ’feel’ of the song in the chapter. For example, I killed a character (it was awful, I cried a lot) and used Robbie Williams’ ”Morning Sun” as my inspiration, trying to capture the feeling of the song, the sense of numbness that follows losing someone we love. I can’t listen to the song now without being wracked with guilt and loss.

Could you tell us a bit about your latest release?

I’ve had a couple of releases in the past month, and another one coming on December 15th, which are all stand-alone stories, but are also part of my series, Hiding Behind The Couch, plus one of them is in Boughs of Evergreen Holiday Anthology. Crying in the Rain came out on November 11th, and it’s “M/M” romance. It’s the story of Ade Simmons, a radio producer trying to leave behind an abusive relationship, and he meets actor Kris Johansson at work. ”A Midnight Clear” is the story in Boughs of Evergreen, and it takes place a year after Crying in the Rain. It’s about a homeless girl who arrives in George and Josh’s hometown, George and Josh being friends of the previously mentioned Kris Johansson. So, ”A Midnight Clear” is not M/M romance, or even romance, but George and Josh are an established couple and they are very romantic and in love (their story is partly told in First Christmas and Breaking Waves). Finally, there’s Red Hot Christmas, which comes out on December 15th, and it’s mostly F/M romance. The main character, Shaunna, is the aforementioned Kris Johansson’s ex-wife (Kris is bisexual), and it’s F/M, not M/F, because Shaunna is a strong, confident, sexy woman.

What have you learned about writing and publishing since you first started?

I have learned that Beta readers are indispensible. Every author needs people they trust to be honest and who know their way around a book. Authors should listen (discerningly) to what their beta readers say. Also, it doesn’t matter how much marketing you do or money you spend. It’s a combination of the right cover, the right blurb and the right social networking that gets an author noticed. Of course, you need a good product too, so making sure books are properly edited and proof-read is also a must.

Is there anything you would do differently?

I wish I’d started writing for real earlier. I’ve always written, but didn’t properly set about writing a novel until I was twenty-five, and it took me seven years to finish. It was published in 2004. After that I got quicker! I didn’t write anything else until 2007, and the rest of it has happened in the seven years since.

Who, or what, if anything has influenced your writing?

Mostly it’s just life experiences that have influenced, and continue to influence my writing. I’ve been around a while and met so many incredible people, and I watch and listen all the time, so I learn stuff that is often less obvious, or kept hidden away deliberately. It’s been a colourful life so far, so I have lots to write about!

What are three words that describe you?

Workaholic, brainiac, introvert

What's your favourite book or who is your favourite writer?

Hm, well, I’m a dog person – I like dogs more than people. To them, every new thing is their favourite thing. That’s me with books. 

Blurb of your latest release or coming soon book

It is the turning point for Ade. He can either stay on the same path, with Fergus—the bully who has repressed, used and isolated him from his friends and family—or he can look in the other direction, towards Kris—the handsome actor with family and friends who readily accept him.
