An Interview with Tommy Malone, a character in Cozzi Cove 2
by Joe Cosentino
I have with me today Tommy Malone, a character in Joe Cosentino’s second Cozzi Cove beach novel, Cozzi Cove: Moving Forward. Since the readers can’t see you, how about you tell them what you look like, Tommy.
I’m thirty-one, tall, muscular, with a bald head and lots of tattoos.
A lot of guys like bald guys.
Send them my way. I’m single.
What do you do at Cozzi Cove?
I own Tommy Malone’s, the bar in town. My father owned it before me.
How do you know Cal Cozzi?
We went to school together and remained friends. Don’t tell him, but I’ve had a crush on him for years.
Has Cal ever reciprocated your feelings?
Unfortunately not. Cal was married to Lance for five years. Now he’s living with Michael.
Tell us more about Cal.
He’s on the left side of the cover. After college Cal dabbled as a professional football player then restaurant owner, but neither was a good fit. After his parents died in an automobile accident, Cal found his calling, managing Cozzi Cove.
What is Cozzi Cove?
Cozzi is a New Jersey shore town named after Cal’s great-grandfather who built eight bungalows on a private cove called Cozzi Cove. He also made every stick of furniture in each bungalow by hand—each with a nautical theme. Each bungalow has an amazing view of the bay and lighthouse in the distance. The main beach and boardwalk are only a mile away. It’s a very romantic place.
What’s a cove?
The bungalows on Cozzi Cove are set on a stretch of cove formed when softer rocks were worn away by the sun and salty water faster than the harder rocks surrounding them. This created a gorgeous bay of turquoise water shielded by large rocks in the distance and smaller rocks near the water’s edge. I’ve as they say, spilled a little seed there quite often.
How did Joe Cosentino think you up?
Joe told me I’m a combination of a few guys he knew as an actor.
And how did Joe come up with Cozzi Cove?
Joe’s family vacationed every summer at his aunt and uncle’s bungalow on the New Jersey Shore. He has terrific memories of swimming and making sandcastles at the beach, wading in the bay, playing miniature golf, eating salt water taffy, jumping up and down on trampolines, and eating at his family’s favorite seafood restaurant. All of those places are in the fictitious place Joe calls Cozzi Cove. That’s my home.
You were in book one of the Cozzi Cove series too. How was Cozzi Cove: Bouncing Back, received?
After Cozzi Cove: Bouncing Back released, many readers and reviewers praised its romantic, humorous, dramatic, mysterious style, and interwoven captivating stories. For example, TBR Pile wrote, “I loved this story. It carries you through the full range of emotions, from joy to sadness, from happiness to anger. The characters are beautifully written.” “I look forward to a return visit to the Cove.” So Joe wrote Cozzi Cove: Moving Forward. As with the first book, romance is everywhere on Cozzi Cove in book two, and nothing is what it seems.
Besides you and Cal, who are the other characters in both books?
Cal’s boyfriend Michael is on the right side of the cover. Michael works for me at the bar. Carla Mangione runs Carla’s Seafood Restaurant. She hold a torch for my sister Taylor who drops in from Rome, Paris, Wall Street, or Palm Springs in each book. As a tough as nails top one-percenter, the world revolves around Taylor, which makes her really funny.
Like in book one, book two is made up of interwoven stories about Cal, you, and the guests in the seven bungalows. Who are the guests this time out?
In this novel Rodney Maxwell and Dennis O’Halloran are a Tony Award winning actor and his estranged producer/husband with their two hired bodybuilder studs, Jarek and Zeus. There’s also Michael’s muscular study buddy from college, Carlo from Italy. And there’s a new man of mystery, handsome George Valis, who seems captivated with Cal. I can’t blame him. And computer analyst, Sam, enlists his best friend Chase in a scheme to attract Sam’s hunky, unsuspecting best friend, Raul. Hunter, a female gay romance novel enthusiast, wants to experience gay life off the page. And finally Gil Van Truren tries to end it all—until he sees a vision of his studly first love from college.
What secrets, humor, tragedy, mysteries, and passions lie in the magical place called Cozzi Cove this summer?
You’ll have to read the book to find out.
What is the moral of the story?
Take a chance on love.
Did Joe pattern Cal after himself and Taylor after his sister?
A few traits here and there, but Joe and Cal are very different, though Joe’s sister is opinionated like Taylor.
Cal and Michael go through a rough patch as their relationship continues in this book from book 1, and Cal makes a personal shocking discovery.
That’s Cozzi Cove, just when you think you’ve figured it out, there’s a game changer.
Will there be more Cozzi Cove novels?
Joe is writing the third book now. Good thing. Otherwise I would get bored just taking up space in Joe’s brain.
Do you see Cozzi Cove as a movie or television series?
Joe wants to play Gil.
Who do you see playing you?
The Rock.
There are also a number of love scenes in the books, but none for you.
Joe tells me I have one in the third book. I’m looking forward to it.
Tell us about Joe’s other gay romance releases.
An Infatuation and A Shooting Star (In My Heart bittersweet dreams novellas) published by Dreamspinner Press are loosely based on Joe’s high school and college years respectively. They were so popular as individual e-books, Dreamspinner Press published them together in one paperback. Joe still receives comments from readers that those stories made them laugh, cry, feel romantic, and changed their lives. An Infatuation won Second Place in Divine Magazine’s Readers’ Poll Award for Best Romance of 2015. A Home for the Holidays is Joe’s popular holiday short novella from Dreamspinner Press about an American law student who, as Joe did, takes a trip to the romantic and gorgeous island of Capri, Italy, where he embarks on a relationship with his captivating third cousin. The Naked Prince and Other Tales from Fairyland from Dreamspinner Press is Joe’s gay take on my favorite beloved fairytales like Cinderella, Goldie Locks and the Three Bears, Pinocchio, Jack and the Beanstalk, and The Snow Queen.
Joe also has two mystery series as well.
Joe’s Nicky and Noah mystery series from Lethe Press are farcical, gay, cozy, who-dun-its. In Drama Queen theatre college professors are dropping like stage curtains. With the inept local detective more interested in getting into Nicky’s pants than solving the murders, it is up to well-endowed Directing professor, Nicky Abbondanza to use his theatre skills (including playing other people) to solve the case, while he directs a murder mystery onstage. Complicating matters is Nicky’s intense crush on Assistant Professor of Acting, gorgeous Noah Oliver, the prime suspect in the murder. Drama Queen (Divine Magazine’s Readers Poll Award for Best Mystery, Best Crime, Best Contemporary, and Best Humorous Novel of 2015) is available as an ebook, paperback, and audiobook performed by Michael Gilboe. It is often on Amazon’s bestseller’s list in its category. In Drama Muscle Nicky and Noah have to use their theatre skills to find out why musclemen are dropping like weights in the Physical Education department while Nicky directs the Student Bodybuilding Competition. In Drama Cruise (releasing soon), Nicky and Noah go on a cruise to Alaska, and discover why college theatre professors are going overboard like lifeboats while Nicky directs a murder mystery dinner theatre show onboard ship.
In the Jana Lane mysteries, with straight leading characters and gay supporting characters, Jana Lane was the biggest child star ever until she was attacked on the studio lot at eighteen years old. In Paper Doll Jana at thirty-eight lives with her family in a mansion in picturesque Hudson Valley, New York. Her flashbacks from the past become murder attempts in her future. Forced to summon up the lost courage she had as a child, Jana ventures back to Hollywood, which helps her uncover a web of secrets about everyone she loves. She also embarks on a romance with the devilishly handsome son of her old producer, Rocco Cavoto. In Porcelain Doll (The Wild Rose Press), Jana makes a comeback film and uncovers who is being murdered on the set and why. Her heart is set aflutter by her incredibly gorgeous co-star, Jason Apollo. In Satin Doll (The Wild Rose Press), Jana and family head to Washington, DC, where Jana plays a US senator in a new film, and becomes embroiled in a murder and corruption at the senate chamber. She also embarks on a romance with Chris Bruno, the muscular detective. In China Doll (releasing late May from The Wild Rose Press), Jana heads to New York City to star in a Broadway play, enchanted by her gorgeous co-star Peter Stevens, and faced with murder on stage and off. Since the novels take place in the 1980’s, Jana’s best friends are gay, and Jana is somewhat of a gay activist, the AIDS epidemic is a large part of the novels.
But I’m not in any of those books.
But you are in Cozzi Cove: Bouncing Back and Cozzi Cove: Moving Forward. Besides reading the Cozzi Cove novels, how can readers connect with you?
Joe loves hearing from readers. They can contact him at: http://www.JoeCosentino.weebly.com. He’ll tell me what they said. He tells me everything. And I in turn tell him things to write in the Cozzi Cove novels. So everybody grab your Speedos, suntan lotion, and shades and head back to Cozzi Cove. Cal’s welcome mat is out for you. I hope to see you at the bar and on the cove!

Review 5 Stars:
Ravi and Tristan both start working at the same video game company on the same day, but the two of them couldn't be more different.
Ravi is out and proud, loves to be the centre of attention, has lots of friends and volunteers for lots of gay charities. His desk is like him: full of personality and no holds barred.
Tristan on the other hand is semi-closeted, has few close friends and his idea of casual Friday is to perhaps loosen his tie a little. He likes order, needs everything to fit into a neat little box and Ravi's out and out gayness makes him uncomfortable. Does he have to broadcast it?
At a work dinner, Ravi finally decides to have it out with Tristan, for he thinks Tristan's discomfort is actually homophobia. But their little argument is overheard by most of the staff at the dinner, and now Tristan is out at work, whether he wanted to be or not. Ravi feels like heel for outing Tristan in public like that and resolves to make it to him.
He gets his chance, when after a food poisoning disaster with most of the other developers out of action, he and Tristan are the only two who can make it the big gaming convention in Seattle. There's one big problem though: the two who were supposed to go on the trip were a married couple and since the hotels are all fully booked, they have to make do with what was already on the reservation: one room.
I have to admit I have a soft spot for characters who have to endure some sort of forced closeness, such as a hotel room, or they get stuck in a broken lift, what have you. And Beta Test was no different, I really enjoyed the fact that our two heroes had to share the room or else.
This book has something that seems rare in a lot of fiction these days, it was almost like discovering a unicorn. The characters talk, they talk a lot and get to know each other before they jump into bed together (shared rooms or not.) You could see they really cared about each other and despite what they both at first told themselves, it wasn't casual sex. They were connected on an emotional as well as physical level and it really shone through in the love scenes.
They were hot, sensual, with vivid descriptions without resorting to being coarse. They are love scenes at the most fundamental level, not sex scenes.
Tristan had a lot of hang-ups about sex, his ex had told him he wasn't very good in bed, and he believed it. Tristan thought that once Ravi had a taste of just how terrible he was, Ravi would soon lose interest. Ravi is appalled that someone would actually say that to a lover and he sets out to show Tristan just how very good he is, and sets about teaching him.
Ravi and Tristan are both different characters, but they do say opposites attract, and I had no feelings of disconnection when reading about these two getting together. They were like jigsaw puzzle pieces that fit together just right. They both had some things in common of course, both had family dramas to deal with, but this book was low on the angst. Not that I mind angst, it was just good to see something different, something a bit lighter for a change.
Well written with lovable, sympathetic characters, Beta Test was a joy from first page to last and I still find myself smiling when I think of Ravi and Tristan. Now, that takes some doing - to keep thinking about the characters after the last page is turned.

Excerpt:
“Full Moon Dating. Have you tried our online site? Yes, I’m afraid you do have to go through the screening process. Really? I’ll be sure to tell 911 when I call them, you sick fuck.” The phone in the outer office slammed down with the musical jingle only an old rotary phone could make.
Very privately, Stone thought that was why Adelia had chosen that phone, and the very film noir detective office vibe she’d used to decorate her domain. It went with the pencil skirt and high-waisted blouse fashion statement she chose every day as well.
She appeared at his door, her victory roll (she had informed him they were called that when he referred to them as “those curly things”) hairdo just slightly mussed, signaling agitation. “Okay, I’m going to start sending the nutbag wannabe paranormals to you, boss. That guy wanted to date a vampire, so he could be a serial killer without actually having to kill someone.”
Stone sat back in his chair and raised a brow. “You’re way meaner than me, Ades. You deal with them so well.”
“There are some crazy bastards out there, boss.” He could almost see her tail, white-tipped and fuzzy, twitching.
“I know. That’s why this business is going to boom.” Stone grinned, tickled as hell that they had an office and a website. Now they just needed to facilitate their first couple, so they could get some testimonials.
Adelia gave him the hairy eyeball and then shook her head. “So, when do you want to go over the sheets?”
“Let’s look at them for an hour or so tonight. I’ve already run the points of comparison database.” They had stuff in their questionnaire that those other match and mingle sites didn’t have. Lots of stuff.
Between his business and marketing savvy and Harve’s computer and psych training, they had a winner, right?
“You got it, boss. I think I already have a couple of good dates in mind.” She waggled her brows.
“I bet they’re gay,” he murmured. Adelia was obsessed with the idea of two men together. That was why she worked for him.
“You think?” She flipped him off, playfully.
“Well, put them at the top of the pile.”
“Top of the pile for Mr. City Wolf and Mr. Country Wolf.”
“Oh, man.” He chuckled. “Tell me why they’re a match?”
“A little red wolf photographer from Dallas who’s had ‘bad luck with long-term commitment’ and a huge gray from up north looking for someone to ‘make his mate.’ It’s perfect.”
“Really?” He grabbed the folders she handed him and flipped through them. “Uh, little red is not into spanking.”
She snorted. “He’s stressed out and overworked. He might like it.”
“Adelia.”
“What?”
“We have to match them based on actual interests.” Maybe he’d ask Harve.
“Says who?”
“We’re a dating service!” He was trying hard not to smile. Harve was the psychologist slash computer geek. Adelia was the psychic. He was pretty damned sure of it.
“And we’re run by an incredibly observant business magnate.”
“Indeed.” He shook his head at her. “You’re such a freak.”
“Yeah, but I’m your freak and you adore me.”
“I do.” He gave her a fond grin before she trotted back out front to answer the phone, her heels clicking. Stone stared at the two folders on the top of the pile. The more he thought about the cowboy wolf from Wyoming who liked to top and the fussy little red from Dallas, the more he liked it.
Maybe he’d skip Harve altogether.
Stone picked up the phone and dialed the number in folder one. “Hello, Aiden Underhill? This is the Full Moon Dating site manager. You’re our grand prize winner this month. You’ve won an all-expenses paid trip to Jackson Hole.”

Review 4 Stars
Fifteen years ago, Kannon was bitten by something in the ocean that has made him avoid it ever since. He's convinced he was having an hallucination due to the fear leaching his oxygen. For his memory insists he was bitten by a merman, but such creatures don't exist, do they? But despite his fear, he is still drawn to the water and feels something tugging at him, pulling him towards his destiny.
Merfolk and humans are different, merfolk act on instinct and Nisha's instincts were telling him that day that he'd found his mate. But after the first bite, his mate looks at him with fear and horror, and despite all his instincts urging him to give the second bite and seal their bond, instead he lets his mate got and hopes that one day he'll return to him.
Kannon drifts through life, not settling anywhere, feeling lost and adrift. His best friend Brett has moved to the Seychelles to run a resort there and Kannon is pleased to be invited to be the best man at his wedding. His father has died recently, leaving Kannon feeling more alone than ever. And it's there that he meets Nisha, the face that has haunted him for fifteen years.
The world-building is top-notch here. Merfolk aren't just human who sometimes have tails, they have their own society, their own rules and morals which don't necessarily match up with those of humans. Consent is a big deal with humans, not so with merfolk. It's instinct that rules everything for them usually. But, and this was refreshing, in the book, this fact is actually dealt with and not brushed under the carpet. They may be fated mates, but Kannon is not going to accept this blindly. Kannon actually calls Nisha out on the fact that Nisha bit him without his consent and the second bite that will seal their bonding will only happen if Kannon wants that too.
It is a love story, and despite the fated mates part, there is no rape here. Nisha and Kannon are both enthusiastic lovers once they talk and accept each other. The love scenes are both hot and tender, with their emotional bond very evident, it's not just physical. Gorgeous descriptions of the tropical locale with its white sandy beaches, lush jungle and exotic plants and animals are weaved throughout the narrative without slowing down the pace.
The writing flows well, the pacing is good and the story reels you in, wanting to read on and see what happens next.
A sweeping, romantic tale.

Book Description:
I thought I had nothing left to lose.
Betrayed and abandoned by those I love, and captured by the enemy, I learned death is a privilege, not a right. Nursing my vengeance and honing my hate is all I can do. Then he appears, turning my black and white world upside down.
Scar Greyback is Alpha to the largest werewolf clan in the region. Scar’s dominance frightens me, excites me. One touch and I know I’m his. His to possess and control, maybe even to love, but I can’t yield. I’ve been bred and trained all my life as a soldier to hunt his kind. Accepting his mating call will doom us both, but once I start on this road to hell, I can’t stop.

Excerpt:
Hanging naked with nothing but blood, grime, and sweat clinging to my skin, and chains lashing my limbs to the rusty eyebolt on the ceiling, I recalled my beautiful mother’s words.
God gives only gives us what we can take. My mother whispered those words when she tucked me in bed, along with other poisonous ones. Grow strong, Gabriel. Be my avenging angel. Think of your father, your uncle, your brother. Every one of the fallen needs our prayers, she said. Harden your body and heart, because our enemies will show you no mercy.
It’s the first time I felt true despair, but not my last. Two other bolts lie close to mine, empty of captives, but even my human nose caught the tell-tale scent of copper, spilled blood.
To remain sane, I thought of other matters, anything to distract myself from my inevitable death. Death has no favorites, the master of arms back at the citadel always said. Still, the previous two occupants on either side of me must have wished their demise didn’t come too soon. Are they still alive, screams gagged by the endless rock walls and passages of Santa Olivia, the underground home of the city’s most prominent animal groups?
“Fuck this.”
Hearing the sound of my voice startled me. I hardly recognized myself. Had I always sounded so weak? I twisted in my chains, but it was futile. These chains are built to hold supernatural captives, but I’m only human. There’s no longer any fight in me. The fire in me has gone out, since the moment my friends and allies betrayed me to the hands of the enemy.
I whispered their names to the darkness, not as a prayer seeking salvation, but as a curse. “Rafael. Michael. Pedro. Abraham.”
Every member of the Soldier of God is christened with the name of an angel or saint. Don’t ask me why. What we’re doing is for the good of humanity, our elders often liked to say, but the truth? Few of the soldiers believed in noble deeds. Most hunted the supernatural down not to cleanse the city of abominations, but because killing is all we’re good at. What we’d been bred for.
Die a noble death, a worthy one, some of my brothers and sisters would say, but it was no longer funny once real fear kicked in. The sound of the heavy bolt to the holding cell shifting made me still.
“Calm the fuck down,” I hissed, but my body refused to obey.
My heart quickened and my breaths came short. I’m Gabriel. Twenty-one-year-old Soldier of God and today’s the day I die.
