Jaydan Callahan’s life is a wreck. Gangs, drugs and violence are a part of his normal day to day routine. For one so young, he’s seen it, been there, done it and gotten more than enough tee shirts as proof. Capable of smelling a cop from a mile away, it comes as no surprise to Jay when the guy he has the hots for is actually working undercover to bring down the town’s notoriously dangerous king pin.

Four men, four lives, each one of them stained by lies, corruption and doubt. Can love show them the path to redemption, or will broken oaths, fear and grief make the crosses they bear too heavy a mantle to carry.
Love is Love

EXCERPT:

He couldn’t speak. The lump in his throat threatened to choke him. All he could do was stare. His eyes grew wider as both of his friends leaned in toward him, sandwiching him between them.

“Shh, it’s ok. We gotcha,” Danny whispered as he nuzzled along Jay’s jaw line.

“Relax. Ain't no one gunna hurt you. Not with me here.” Declan’s deep baritone voice sent a shiver through Jay. All three of them had been lifelong friends. Danny and Declan both knew what Jay had given up to look after Sylvie. They’d stuck by him, helped him, and watched each other’s backs numerous times in the past. They were close; however, they had never been as close as they were right then.

But, as he'd thought earlier, things had changed. Marrenzo wanted Declan. The mafia boss’s son would stop at nothing to get him which put Danny at risk and made whatever was happening between the three of them, a one-time thing. It was goodbye. Jay felt it, had known it was inevitable. Bringing up both of his hands, Jay held their faces in his palms and smiled through the tears.

“I fucking love you guys! Stay safe, stay together and let me know you’re both ok. Brothers to the end.” Jay leaned in one at a time and kissed both men. His lips tasted them, their tongues sought his. The kiss was warm, welcoming and greedily consumed. He’d have given anything; everything to have the same with Orrin.

“Brothers to the end,” Declan rumbled and moved in, taking Jay's mouth.

“Always,” Danny whispered as he slipped his hand down over Jay’s chest. His fingers fumbled, slipping beneath Jay’s tee shirt. He lifted it slowly as though he were unwrapping something to be savored and enjoyed. Declan's hand followed, lifting with Danny until the shirt was removed and Jay lay on his side. Danny faced him chest to his chest and Declan curved in around his back.

The warmth of their bodies felt so good. Hard chests from hours of working out in back yards made Jay feel more wanted and connected than he’d ever felt before. Tears stung his eyes. Even being held between the two people he’d grown up with, trusted and loved, Jay's heart refused to let go of its want of Orrin’s touch.

“I can’t,” Jay whispered as he buried his face against Danny’s chest.

“You love him? Your Fed?” Declan asked before brushing his lips lightly over the back of Jay’s neck. Warm breath fanned across his shoulders, teasing the small hairs that reached up for more.

“He’s not a Fed,” Jay replied. “He’s NCIS; a naval investigator. He needed the low down on Marrenzo and rather than go for the inside knowledge chose to see what the opposing side knew about him,” Jay explained. He wanted them to understand that he hadn’t sold them out.

“Hold on. You knew all of this time? You guys knew and never said a word?” Jay asked and rolled onto his back to face both of his friends.

“Fed, Cop, MP, NCIS, it's all the same to me.”

REVIEW 4 STARS:

Danny Wong is a shy PhD student who is so far in the closet he's almost back out the other side. He's had a crush on the rugged handome cop who patrols the university campus, but feels too shy to do anything about it. Instead, he just wishes and fantasises about what life with Dave Pearce might be like.

His family doesn't know he's gay and Danny feels like he is letting them down by not being normal, but not being straight and marrying a woman to have children with.

But one night after almost being attacked by a mugger with a knife, Dave is there to rescue him and that night stirs the beginnings of their relationship.

Dave is a troubled man and feels he doesn't deserve love. Abused as children, he and his best friend John became lovers as teenagers, but John didn't recover from what he suffered and after seventeen years together he committed sucide.

Dave is afraid that he if lets anyone get too close, he will only hurt them further and he tries his best to not get involved with Danny. Hard to do when he has fallen in love with him and doesn't know how he will face life without him. Crisis after crisis seems to follow, but still Danny hangs in there and tries to get Dave to see that he too is a man deserving of love, no matter what happened in the past. But can he ever get Dave to believe it?

This was a wonderful, romantic story with a side serving of angst, but it doesn't become overpowering. There is hope in the story too and I adored how Dave got Danny to come out of his shell more. I loved both Danny and Dave, although at times I did get confused as to who was who -the names sounded so similar.

Well-written with sensual love scenes, but some made be blink a bit. The characters discuss safe sex and then decide NOT to use it. It would have been better for it not to be mentioned at all and then I could pretend that this was a universe where STDs didn't exist. As it was, mentioning it and then not using protection seemed odd to me. There was also one scene were the only lubrication was saliva. Ouch! I was glad to see later scenes had some more lube.

But all in all I very much enjoyed the story and I would certainly read more by this author in the future.

Book Description:

What will it take for a dragon prince to defy his father and fly on his own?

Prince Jules, the least favorite of the Dragon King's children, lives simply, banished to his rooms and the amazing adventures found in his books. He has never left the palace or shifted into his dragon form…he's never done anything.

Dragon shifter Lem is assigned to Jules as the prince's new bodyguard, and is determined to keep Jules safe from the Graithen, who killed the prince’s previous guardian. Lem grows to hate how the King hides Jules away, and longs to show him how to fly. His love for Jules also grows but it is forbidden, like so much in Jules' life.

When the Graithen attack again, though, everything changes.

Review:

Considred the runt of the litter, Prince Jules is the least favourite and banished to his rooms and never allowed to leave them. His only friend and companion is his bodyguard, Mabon, and the only life Jules lives is through his books. He's a prisoner in the royal castle and everything that a normal shifter can do is forbidden for him. He isn't allowed to change form, he isn't allowed to fly and he isn't allowed to venture beyond his rooms or the small courtyard enclosing them.

When Mabon is killed in an attack by the Graithen, Jules despairs. He doesn't eat, he barely sleeps and he hardly ever ventures outside, into the warmth of the sun which his dragon needs.

Lem is assigned as his new bodyguard and gradually Lem takes Jules out of his shell, getting him to eat, to go outside and to get some much needed rest. The more Jules recovers, the more enamoured Lem becomes of him. But Jules is a royal, Lem is a commoner bodyguard. Love between them would not be allowed, much like everything else in Jules' life. There are no bars on Jules' gilded cage, but it is a cage nontheless and Lem yearns to break the prince free of it.

Soon it becomes clear that Jules is not the runt of the litter at all, but something much bigger and unique.

I have read a few Sean Michael books before and while those were more on the erotic/raunchy side, this one feels more romantic to me. Not that to say there isn't sex in it, it's a Sean Michael book, of course there's sex ;) but this one delves deeper into the emotions of the characters. Most of the book only features Lem and Jules, with scant appearances by a few side characters. It meant that the reader was feeling as isolated as those two were within the confines of the castle rooms and then later on in the mountain caves. This was most definitely a story of Lem and Jules, rather than a story of the world they inhabit.

I would have liked a bit more world-buliding and a bit more build-up to discovering what the strange markings on Jules' hands were. The explanation happened rather suddenly and it fell a bit flat. Some of the love scenes were so sweet they could make your teeth ache, with lots of endearments and promises of forever which I don't normally care for. But here I liked it, as it fitted these two characters and what they would say. Jules is very naive and inexperienced but Jules knew what he wanted and pursues Lem as much as Lem pursues him.

All in all, an enjoyable, romantic read.

Book Review: Viscount's Wager by Ava March

Viscount's Wager
Gambling on Love #3
by Ava March
M/M Historical Romance/Regence
Carina Press
Review Copy via Netgalley
5 Stars

Blurb:

You never forget your first love, but is a second chance worth the gamble?

Anthony, Viscount Rawling, knows exactly what he wants in life and he isn't above having a look about London for it. When he spots recently widowed Gabriel Tilden at a ton function, he thinks he might have found love…again.

Gabriel is as gorgeous and reserved as he was when he broke Anthony's heart seven years ago. But they were only adolescents then…surely Anthony won't hold the incident against him. And especially not when the attraction between them is stronger than ever.

Gabriel came to London in search of distraction, and a teasing Anthony is impossible to resist. As Anthony introduces Gabriel to the pleasures that can be found in the city—and in his bedchamber—their bond deepens into something more. Yet both men are hiding secrets that could pull them apart forever…

Review:

At age sixteen, Anthony got his heart's desire for a brief moment: Gabriel, the older boy he'd been in love with for ages kissed him at a house party at Gabriel's family estate. Then, a scant few hours later he had it broken. Gabriel had been caught with a young woman and no chaperone in sight and to save the lady's reputation, Gabriel offered for her hand.

Now, seven years later, Anthony has inherited the viscounty after his father's death, and Gabriel has become a recent widow.

Anthony is a dutiful son, escorting his mother and sister to their social engagements and it is by chance that he meets Gabriel again at a musical evening. Still as handsome as ever, and still apt to make Anthony's heart fly out of his chest, he offers to show Gabriel around London.

Gabriel reluctantly agrees, for he feels he would be deserving of Anthony snubbing him after their history, but it seems Anthony isn't one to hold a grudge and soon Gabriel is feeling as much in love with Anthony as he had been that awful day when he got engaged.

Gabriel didn't love his wife, he feels guilty that he isn't mourning her death more, and guilty over these feelings he has for Anthony, another man. Gabriel feels he doesn't deserve love in any form and he spends most of his evenings gambling away his scant fortune, just for the chance to feel something other than guilt.

Every few days he seeks out Anthony for a brief interlude of wild passion, but he hardly ever stays the night and Anthony is beginning to feel used rather than loved. He doesn't know how to make Gabriel see that he is 'the one' and that two men can find happiness even in a time when it was illegal, as long as they are discreet.

Ava March is rapidly becoming one of my favourite Regency authors. She loves the time she is writing about and it shows. Everything you expect to be in a Regency romance is here: from gentlemen's clubs like White's, to taking a ride around Hyde Park, musical evenings, balls and soirees, the marriage market of the Season, it's all here.

This is the third book in a series, but I hadn't read the others (yet) and this book works perfectly well as a standalone.

The pacing is good, the dialogue flows well and doesn't seem out of place in a Regency. The love scenes sizzle with sensuality, with a good blend of emotion and eroticism. The connection between them shines through and the love scenes flowed well within the story, they didn't seem tacked on just to have sex in there.

My heart broke for Anthony after his hopes were dashed so soon after their first kiss and it was Anthony who I felt most close to as I was reading. I'm glad we got to see inside Gabriel's head though, otherwise some of the things he did, he would have come across as some sort of cad. As it was, you know his guilt and his conflicted feelings and so you can empathise more with him.

It was a wonderful read to get lost in for a few hours.

Excerpt:

Vincent Amber’s weighing heart lightened when he saw the rusted screw. It stuck out of the mortar screaming for his attention. Could this be the glimpse of hope he had been waiting for?

He stared up at the vampire who had brought him his drink, his vile undead stench permeating the room and making Vincent’s stomach sour. His enemy didn’t speak. No words were needed for his task. And as soon as he had deposited their nourishment, he exited not having noticed the excited glimmer in Vincent’s eyes

He waited until he was sure the vampire’s acute sense of hearing couldn’t pick up his voice, then whispered to his brother Warren, “I think I know a way we can escape.”

Warren’s hallow, tired black eyes widened. “How?”

Vincent stretched, reaching for the brick wall and grasped the head of the rusted screw. He prayed the mortar it was screwed in was as old and battered as the screw itself and it would loosen with vigorous twisting.

When it wiggled with his touch, he gasped. “Yeah, just hold on. I almost got it.”

“What do you almost have?”

When it had completely come free, Vincent held it in his hands, observing the oxidized tip. It was sharp enough to do the job. “This.” He held up his possession.

Warren’s eyes and face brightened. Vincent hadn’t seen his brother smile in months, ever since the Draco vampire clan raided their home, killed their parents, and kidnapped Warren and Vincent. They had been the vampires’ source of nourishment and entertainment ever since then, prisoners in a three-story farmhouse not that far off from the highway and the town.

Vincent had seen the farmhouse numerous times before the plague came and wiped out two thirds of the population. It had been owned by a kind, elderly couple who died when the plague swept through the town, killing them and most of the population.

The Draco clan had taken it over about six months ago, using it as their lair and hide out.

Using the sharp edge, Vincent began to rub it against the rope constraining his hands in a back and forth motion across it. Thanks to its dry, brittle’s texture, it frayed easily.

He laughed. “Ha, I bet they didn’t even search the basement before they moved us here yesterday.”

“Yeah, they were too excited to make room for their new prizes and too cocky to think we would try to escape.” Warren leaned closer to peer at Vincent’s handiwork. “Is it working?”

Vincent pulled his bound wrists apart. The rope snapped. “Yep.” He quickly got to work loosening his feet.

It took him less than ten minutes to free himself and his brother. They stood and wiggled, loosening their tight muscles in an inept motion. It felt off to Vincent after having been constrained for so long. He walked to the boarded window on legs like jelly.

“We have to do this quick before they catch on,” Warren warned.

“I know.” He searched the toolbox on the shelf next to the window. Luck was finally on their side this evening. He found a hammer in it. He couldn’t believe it. He wondered if he were dreaming, a dream from which he’d wake up any second. After all these months of being held captive, they finally had a chance at freedom.

Using the claw side of it, he pulled out the nails and loosened the wood board. He opened the window in stealth silence and they quietly crawled out. Once outside they took deep breaths. The cool, crisp evening air caressed the lining of their lungs and his skin. Goosebumps spread with Vincent’s experience. They began to run as fast as their unaccustomed, wonky feet and leg muscles allowed.

“We just have to make it to the road.” Vincent panted. He guessed from the moving light beams ahead they were about two hundred yards away from the highway.

And when he thought they had finally made it, he heard the sound of flapping wings. A haunting wave rolled over him. He knew what that ominous sound meant.

He turned his stiff neck to look up over his shoulder and saw them. He shuddered. Vampire bats were approaching at lightning speed.

“Hurry, Warren!” he shouted as he picked up speed.

A few seconds later he heard his brother scream.

Excerpt

Dave went through the back entrance of Stata Center and upstairs to the floor where Danny Wong’s office was. Damn. The door was closed and locked. He knocked lightly and waited. No answer. Danny Wong had obviously gone home. Dave had lost his chance until Monday night.

Breathing a sigh, he went back out and around toward the front of the building. A last-second impulse made him hope that maybe Danny had only just left, and Dave could catch him.

Dave turned the corner and froze. His police instincts kicked in when he saw Danny on the sidewalk, handing something to a man who appeared homeless. Danny’s back was to Dave, blocking his complete view of the raggedy-looking guy. But then Danny stepped back, and Dave saw the flash of a knife blade as it caught the light from a streetlamp. Danny was being mugged.

Dave’s adrenaline kicked in and his hand automatically went to his gun, slipping it from its holster.

“Hey!” he yelled, breaking into a run. “Drop your weapon!” He sprinted down the steps, onto the concrete walk, his gun pointed at the mugger.

The assailant turned and broke into a run. Dave lengthened his stride, jumping some low winter-naked bushes. From the size of the guy, he could tackle him easily and arrest him.

Suddenly, Danny stepped in front of him, causing Dave’s gun to be aimed right at his chest.
The movement shocked him, and he halted, lowering the gun on pure instinct.

“Don’t,” Danny said. “Let him go.”

Dave stared at him, his chest heaving, every nerve in his body coiled like a spring. Was this guy nuts? His attention remained riveted on Danny, not only from concern for Danny’s safety but out of shock at the way Danny had come between him and the offender who’d just attacked him. “He mugged you. Now he’s getting away.” Dave looked in the direction the mugger had run, but saw no sign of him. He reached for his radio to call for dispatch. A sudden pressure on his arm caused him to still. Danny’s gloved hand rested on the sleeve of his jacket.

“Let him go. He was just hungry.”

Dave’s jaw dropped, and he stared, wide-eyed. Had he heard correctly? If Danny Wong had landed on a spaceship in front of him, he couldn’t have seemed weirder. Had this guy just walked off a movie set? No one said things like that in real life. Not to a cop anyway.

Dave’s heart still pumped hard from the brief sprint. He was forty-one now. Still in good shape, but not a kid anymore. “You’re lucky you didn’t get killed with that attitude.” He sounded churlish, but he couldn’t help it. His role was to protect people, and he hated when someone didn’t let him do so. Just the way John hadn’t let Dave’s love for him protect him.

Danny was staring at him, his almond-shaped eyes wide and soft. He emanated an inner strength that Dave had never encountered before, something that came from deep inside. “In the Tao Te Ching, Lao Tzu says, ‘Only pursue an offender to show him the way’.”

Dave raised his eyebrows. Was this guy for real? Or had he watched too many reruns of Kung Fu with David Carradine? What was he going to say next, I am Kane, I will help you? Dave almost chuckled at his own inner dialogue, but he couldn’t ignore the look in Danny’s eyes, a potent force of something he couldn’t quite identify.

Jesus. Dave raked a hand through his hair. He needed to be running after the mugger, and here he was, actually considering obeying the victim of the crime. What the hell?

Blurb:

Ross and Kyle's story.

Even if Ross and Kyle make it out of this alive, will the secrets in Kyle's heart stay safe?

Kyle gets caught up in a case that is entirely unrelated to Bodyguards Inc. Not only does he abruptly need time off, but he has to have absolute trust and complete support from Ross without being able to tell Ross a thing.

CIA Agent Stefan Mortimer needs Kyle's help with a case of a geneticist and a missing formula. Trouble is being led right to Kyle’s door, endangering the life of the team he has built and the man that he loves.

Going undercover, with Ross as his husband, is the worst kind of torture in so many ways, but it is the only answer. Kyle and Ross may well live through this but Kyle is convinced his heart won't survive.

Unique Excerpt 1

“Who is Stefan?” Ross asked as soon as they hit the open road. He was looking directly at Kyle and couldn’t fail to see the stiffening in him, the tension in his shoulders and jaw. “I get it’s probably all I need to know, but if we’re going undercover, I need something.”

Kyle glanced at him briefly, because he was navigating the country backroads. He didn’t answer until they joined the main road north.

“You don’t need to know that,” Kyle said. His typical soft, almost slow accent had become tighter, clipped. He sighed. “And I can’t tell you, even if I want to.”

“But you trust him?”

The answer seemed to come very naturally. “I trust Stefan with my life.”

“Do you trust him with mine?” God knows where that question came from, but Ross didn’t apologize for asking. Normally, when there was a new case, there was the research, the checks, the personnel training, or at least some kind of background.

Kyle didn’t answer. Distracted by a stop light, he was staring pointedly straight ahead.

“So do you?” Ross pressed.

“The question is more do you trust I can look after you,” Kyle murmured.

“You have a gun.”

“I know.”

“You realize this is England, not America. We don’t have guns.”

Kyle hesitated. There was some definite thought going on behind his dark blue eyes. Ross could tell that whatever Kyle wanted to say wasn’t easy. “We might need a weapon.”

Ross considered this. “Okay. And yes, I trust you can look after me.” Then he had to add a proviso. “Not that I need looking after, Mr. Hero.”

Kyle muttered something under his breath, but Ross didn’t catch it, and he wasn’t going to push.

“Anyway, talk me through our legends,” Ross said.

“Back story is just fine.”

“I like the word legend.”

“You’re not a spy, Ross,” Kyle said. He had a small hint of his normal teasing tone in the words.

“Okay, so what is our back story?”

“We’re just married,” Kyle began.

“And our names?”

“We can keep the ones we have.”

“So when you said undercover, you just meant the married-relationship bit.”

“Pretty much that, yeah.”

“So, hey, I’m Ross Jackson and I’m married to you, Kyle Monroe. What is it we do for a living? And how long have we been married?”

Kyle shook his head. “I have no fucking idea.”

“Okay.” Ross wasn’t used to setting up cover stories, but he had an imagination as good as the next man. “We met through work… wait, what is it we do for work?”

“We are a consulting company.”

“Consulting on what? Finance? That always bores people enough to back off. Sales, marketing, that kind of thing. Okay, we’re financial consultants. You’re the hotshot investment guy, and I’m your PA. That would work. We met at the Christmas party. You were drunk, and unrequited love was finally reciprocated. We fell in love straight away and were married on Valentine’s Day at St James’s Church in the village. It was a quiet wedding, just family and friends. You got drunk again and did a whole lot of dad dancing. It was a beautiful day.”

“I get drunk a lot in this backstory.” Kyle sounded more relaxed, and at least he had stopped gripping the steering wheel so tightly.

Ross was happy to lighten the tone. It was what he did best where his boss was concerned. Kyle was a happy man with an edge of dangerous, and he had his dark days when he was snappy and mostly hid in his office.

“What can I say, I married a lush,” Ross said with a laugh.
