Excerpt

Are you really him? The Lio… Sir Rhyder?”

Rhyder straightened up from where he had been examining the array of training swords, and Daymon could have kicked himself. What was he saying, he already knew this was Rhyder—and Rhyder, judging from the slight quirk of his mouth, knew that too. Still, the man was polite enough not to say anything to embarrass Daymon and made a bow. “At your service, Your Highness. But if it please you, I am no Sir. Just Rhyder will suffice.”

Oh. Yes. Of course, I knew that. I just….” Daymon trailed off, all of his practiced conversations and smooth, courtly language failing him.

When it became apparent that Daymon was lost for words, Rhyder prompted him, as though there had been no awkward pause. “And you are Prince Daymon. It’s a pleasure to finally meet you, Your Highness. To what do I owe the honor?”

I… um, that is. I always wanted to meet you! Ever since I heard the stories, you know, the ones about… and there are so many of them! Is it true you bested Kharsan the Great in single combat? And that you tamed a Rhodan horse when you were only twelve?” With an effort, Daymon stopped before he could embarrass himself further.

To his credit, Rhyder did not laugh at his babbling. “Yes and yes,” he replied easily, as though this was the kind of conversation he had every day—which, for all Daymon knew, he did. “I did have some help with that second one, however. And if truth be told, I’ve wanted to meet you for some time now as well.”

Me?” Daymon squeaked.

Indeed. Your Highness must be aware that if there are plenty of stories about me, there are many more surrounding you.”

Excerpt

PRINCE DAYMON CAME to with a stifled moan, pain dragging him back to unwelcome awareness. His entire body throbbed, but he kept his eyes closed, not wanting to be greeted with the sight of a bare cell or the bruises where he had been struck. The cold had numbed him to some of the damage, but he could tell without looking that several fingers were likely broken. Instead, he fixed his mind on what he had been dreaming of only moments ago.
Daymon did not remember his mother well, but he knew what she looked like from the portraits his older brother, Daylor, had kept. From his mother, Daymon had inherited hair as fine and dark as ink and eyes a deep blue, when both his father and his brother were golden-haired with eyes close to amber in color. Where they were tall, broad-shouldered, and olive-skinned like most of his ancestors, Daymon stood several inches shorter than nearly every other grown male he could name, his slight build and pale complexion further marking him as more his mother’s child than his father’s—as though anyone needed reminding. And yet, despite being too young to recall his mother’s voice, or so he thought, Daymon could have sworn he had heard her whisper to him.Just a little longer, the words had tickled past his ear. Just a little longer, and he will come for you. How could he not? But the sensation of his head being held, the fingers brushing softly through his hair, had vanished as soon as Daymon had woken, and although he had never really known her, he felt her absence now as keenly as though she had truly been with him.

Excerpt

Mists closed around him and hid the moon in a veil of cold grey. He came to a stumbling halt, fear pounding through him in time to the wild beat of his heart. As he caught his breath, he heard the unmistakable sound of flowing water, perhaps a creek winding through the heather. Callum gnawed his lips. Danger lurked on the water’s edge for an unwary man.
On the other hand, men built homes along the waterways and learned to guard against the faery folk. He sighed. Either choice spelled risk, but hunger and loneliness won out and sent him in search of the water’s path through the thick heath.
The gray fog made it hard to see his way and he cursed when he stepped into the creek before he knew he’d come to it. An icy chill raced up his leg and he glanced around, feeling as if he’d been startled from a dream. The mists were gone, leaving the fields bright with moonlight. Faint music caught his ears and he spied several globes of light in the distance. Will-o’-the-wisp? He didn’t know, but the haunting melody tugged at his heart and he walked toward it, careful of his footing.

Callum's Fate 3D Cover
It was caution that saved him before he made the fatal mistake of stepping into the faery ring that suddenly appeared at his feet. He might have become lost in their dark realm. He stared down, delighted with the brightly dressed wee folk fluttering and dancing in the circle of mushrooms. Laughter floated up to him and he smiled reflexively. Several of the pretty creatures spied him and flittered up to tug at his clothing with tiny hands. These were male, scantily dressed, and one saucy lad winked a bright eye and flew up to nibble at his lips.
Callum laughed and shooed them gently off. “I’m not fool enough to join you,” he told the three hovering near his face.

Interview with Gideon from “Ice Cold” in Joe Cosentino’s
THE NAKED PRINCE AND OTHER TALES FROM FAIRYLAND
published by Dreamspinner Press

I am happy to have with me today, Gaelen from “Ice Cold” in Joe Cosentino’s new novella from Dreamspinner Press, THE NAKED PRINCE AND OTHER TALES FROM FAIRYLAND. Since the readers can’t see you, what do you look like Gideon?

I have auburn hair, violet eyes, a slightly crooked nose, golden freckles, and I’m pretty muscular from working outside our cottage. Since we live in Frost Village, there is lots of shoveling to do. When Kieran and I sit by the fire at night, he tells me I smell like fresh-baked bread.

How old are you?

Eighteen. I was frigid until I met Kieran and we had that first glorious night in front of the fire.

Both your parents and Kieran’s parents died in the great ice storm. How did that make you feel?

Terrified. We didn’t know where to go. Thankfully the old woman who lived nearby took us both in and became our mother.

But things grew frightening again when Kieran accepted a ride on a beautiful sleigh from Prince Isidore.

I’ll say! I had to search through quite a few kingdoms to find him, melt his heart, and bring him back home to me.

And along the way you had quite a few adventures. Tell us about them.

You’ll have to read the book. All I can say is they were full of adventure and romance.

Why haven’t we seen gay fairytale characters in mainstream fairytales or movies?

Joe Cosentino wondered the same thing! As a kid Joe’s older sister read him fairytales in bed every night before sleep. Joe was entranced by the riveting stories of peasants becoming princes and princesses and finding true love. The stunning locations, wonderment, humor and tragedy, and happy endings filled his young mind like peanuts in an elephant’s sack. Joe wanted to be a character in those stories, live in those palaces, dine with the charming princes, and bring happiness to everyone in the kingdoms.

Later as an adult, he wrote musical plays based on fairytales for professional theatre companies: Princess and the Pea, The Nutcracker and the Mouse King, Aladdin, The Emperor’s New Clothes, and The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. But here’s where guys like Kieran and me came into the picture. Joe recently reread many of his favorite fairytales, and he was upset to see no openly gay characters in any of them! So he asked himself, ‘Why aren’t there gay people in fairyland? Why can’t a peasant boy fall in love with a handsome prince (or a frozen queen)? Wouldn’t a homeless blond boy seek refuge in a house with three hunky bears? What was Pinocchio’s growing appendage really all about?

Did Jack enjoy his time with the Giant more than Jack ever let on? What’s the good of fairytales without any fairies?’ Miraculously Kieran, Prince Isidore, I and the other characters in The Naked Prince and Other Tales from Fairyland were born in Joe’s mind in four humorous, romantic, adventurous, touching, and gay tales. I feel so lucky to star in one of them!

What are the stories about?

“The Naked Prince” is a different take on the Cinderella story. Cinder, a poor and beautiful young man who designs clothing, makeup, and hair for his stepmother and stepsisters, offers his clothing and slippers to a naked stranger in the woods who turns out to be none other than me, Prince Charming. Will Cinder and I confront our manipulative mothers, bring equality to the kingdom, find ourselves, and find one another? I can give you a hint. We are still living happily ever after together in Fairyland.

In “The Golden Rule,” when he is caught with nimble Jack, eighteen-year-old Gideon Golden is thrown out of his home in Fairyland by his homophobic parents. With nowhere else to go, he breaks into the home of three men living on Bear Mountain. Bo and Butch enjoy having a young roommate, but Ben isn’t convinced. Will Gideon and Ben make vinegar or honey?

“Whatever Happened To … ?” takes place on Christmas Eve. A reporter living on Andersen Lane interviews a celebrity for the Queen Newspaper series, “What Ever Happened To … .” Friction ensues between the celebrity with the growing appendage who can’t tell fact from fiction, and the reporter who has a thing for giants. Eventually a romantic spark is lit between the two as Christmas Day arrives, and they realize they have more in common than living in Fairyland. Finally in “Ice Cold,” after losing their families during the great ice storm in the northernmost kingdom of Fairyland, young Gaelen and Kieran pledged their love for one another. When Isidore rides into Frost Village on his elaborate sleigh, Kieran follows the handsome prince to his castle in Arctic Kingdom, where Kieran becomes Isidore’s bewitched slave. This leads Gaelen on an amazing adventure to find his true love and melt his frozen heart. All four stories are terrific, but I like mine and Cinder’s best.

Who is your favorite character in THE NAKED PRINCE AND OTHER TALES FROM FAIRYLAND, besides yourself?

Kieran of course! Not only is he handsome and muscular with thick dark hair and piercing hazel eyes, he is so sweet, caring, warm, and terrific. How lucky I was to save him from Prince Isidore’s cold, calculating clutches!

Will you be starring in more of Joe Cosentino’s books?

This is it for me. However, all of his books are great. Book Review: Ravenhearth by Lotus Oakes

Ravenhearth
by Lotus Oakes
Less Than Three Press
M/M Romance/Fantasy
4 Stars

Blurb:

In a world covered by a deadly miasma, humans survive by way of the protection of powerful mages known as Keepers. In the town of Ravenhearth, the Keeper requests a companion every ten years. What happens to them after those ten years, no one knows, for none has ever returned.

Ash is a young orphan who dreams of learning magic. When the newest request for a companion is posted, he volunteers. Upon his arrival, he finds the Keeper's home is nothing like the fearful whispers shared around the village. Instead, he slowly grows to become part of the close-knit family of the Keeper's castle—and falling for Giles, the butler of Ravenhearth, rather than the mage he's been sent there to attend.

Review:

Orphaned and homeless, Ash ekes out a living doing odd jobs around the town of Ravenhearth for a pittance in coins and scraps of food. His clothes are ragged and worn and the rest of the townfolk give him a wide berth, for they always felt there was something strange about him.

Like all inhabited towns, Ravenhearth is protected by a Keeper, who lives in a castle not far from the town. Every ten years the Keeper sends a letter asking for a companion from the village. Ash is old enough to remember the last letter and the sting of magic from it. His mother had been a mage, not as powerful as a Keeper and Ash too wishes to learn magic.

And maybe, if he volunteers this time, then the Keeper might be able to teach him. And leaving the town where his mother died would certainly be no hardship, it's not as if he'd be leaving lots of friends behind. And so begins Ash's adventure in the castle of the Keeper.

The book had a little bit of a fairy tale feel to it, and reminded me a little of the Cinderella story, although this one was a gay story.

Ash is the point of view character for the whole book and while that helped you get into Ash's head, you only reall got to know the other character's through Ashs's eyes. It has excellent characterisation, even some you love to hate. I couldn't stand the twins, Whitney and Courtney. They came across as petulant, whining brats, although they were adults and older than Ash. Lilah and Verity became surrogate mothers of a sort to Ash and it was good to see him let go of some of the grief he was still carrying around after his own mother's death.

Romance between Ash and Giles is slow to take off, it's mainly one-sided for most of the book, with Giles not even being aware that Ash has fallen in love with him. When they do get together, you feel like them cheering them on, finally!

The book was about 60,000 words and unusually for a book of that length, there weren't really any chapters, just scene breaks. Chapters would have helped it flow more easily.

There were some questions I would have loved to have been answered in the book, but they weren't. What was this strange fog? Why was it toxic to humans? Was it some sort of industrial accident? A magic experiment gone wrong? We don't find out. The author gave a tantaslising taste of world-building but not enough. I wanted to know more about Ash's world, more about how magic worked here but we barely see any magic at all. Mostly Ash reading about it and doing meditation to clear his mind.

So, although I had some problems with the world-building, the story itself is good, well-written and populated with interesting characters. There are a couple of explitict scenes, but I'd say this romance falls more on the sweet side, with a lot of tension and build-up between our two main characters.

If you want a romantic read that's light on the angst, give this one a try.

The Future of the Mauritanian Saga
by Layal Dorine

Good Morning and thank you for having me in on your blog today, it’s a joy to be here and to have the chance to talk about my new release: Broken Prince, Mismatched Eyes. I have to admit that the idea of doing a second book sort of snuck up on me. It certainly wasn’t my intention when I started writing Broken Prince. Caden and Rhys were such special characters, and seeing them come together was amazing, but as they grew, I started to notice some of the other characters around them, who were learning from them and beginning to grow too. As I launched into the final chapter, I found myself questioning just how final I really wanted to make the story.

It seemed to me like Caden and Rhys were only just beginning their journey together, then there was Luc, who endured so much over the course of the story. Didn’t he deserve a chance to be happy too? The inner muses determined that yes, yes he did, so book two is going to focus on his story. But don’t worry, seeing as how he’s Caden’s guard, there will be plenty of Caden and Rhys in the second book as well. At this point, book two has been completely outlined, something I don’t usually do but the ideas were flowing fast that day so I just had to jot them down. I think Luc and his love interest were excited about the possibility of finally getting together.

The plan at the moment is for a third book to round out the trilogy, with each having the ability to be read as a stand alone. The cast of characters as well as the island of Mauritania itself has really kind of grown on me in ways I never expected. On the surface, it’s such a beautiful place, buffered by cliffs and oceans, but there are so many hidden dangers just waiting to be revealed and that has made it a fun playground to construct a story.

Thank you so much for having me and giving me the opportunity to discuss Caden, Rhys, Mauritania and my plans for their future.

All of his life, Caden DeMott’s mismatched eyes have made him the target of superstition and scorn. Though he is the son of a nobleman, he’s been allowed to run free over the hills and moors, mostly ignored by his family. No one ever thought to inform him that he had been betrothed since infancy, until the day his fiancé, Prince Rhys Gwyther arrived to marry him.

Rhys is the prince of the small island country of Mauritania, a land rich in gems, rose oil, and pearls, but poor in skilled artisans and seeds to grow crops. In order to further cement the trade route to the mainland, he’s been sent to marry a man he’s never met, and bring him back to Mauritania. Unfortunately, an accident years before has left Rhys with a lot of emotional baggage and very little trust in strangers.

But trust is exactly what Caden and Rhys are going to need if they are to make a life together, and help unravel the mystery of who’s been smuggling valuable gems and pearls off the island. Add in the realization that Caden’s stepmother, Mildred and her island representative, Maxwell, have been importing inferior goods for years, forcing Mauritania to become more dependent on them, and trust becomes even more difficult.

Caden possesses the knowledge to finally allow Rhys’ father to unravel the plot to ruin Mauritania, but only if the king and his son are willing to put their faith in Caden’s loyalty to his new home. Something that is difficult to do after Caden is accused of cheating on his marriage vows to Rhys with his guard, Luc. Will Rhys believe him innocent? Or will their marriage be over before it truly has a chance to begin?

EXCERPT:

Jackson had watched a medley of emotions play across Caden’s face as the story unfolded, but now the young man sat with his hand still upon the head of his hound, a blank, almost expressionless look in his eyes. Jackson lingered with bated breath, waiting on Caden’s response.

Caden blinked several times and resumed scratching Brutes’ ears. “Will I ever see you again?”

Jackson tried to give his son a smile but was certain it came out a grimace. “I will do my best to come to Mauritania and visit with you each year around the time of your birth.”

Caden dropped his gaze, but not before Jackson saw the shimmer of tears forming there. He should have known Caden would not be fooled by such a flimsy lie.

And what about them?” Caden asked, stroking Titus’ head now as well. Jackson heard the hitch in his son’s voice and the shaky exhale of breath that revealed just how flimsy a hold he had on his emotions.

“I honestly can’t answer that,” Jackson told him. “You will have to ask Prince Rhys if he will allow you to keep them. I promise you that they will have a home here for the rest of their days if he will not.”

Caden ducked his head, hiding the tears that now flowed freely. With some difficulty, Jackson swallowed down the lump in his throat and reached out to pull his son into an embrace. For several long minutes, no other words were spoken.

“I have never disobeyed you father,” Caden’s soft voice whispered in his ear. “I will marry the prince and do my best not to shame you.”

“I am proud of you, my son,” Jackson whispered back, hugging him tighter, “and I have faith in you. I know you will do your best.”

“Is he kind? Is he going to be afraid of me? Perhaps he won’t want me because of my eyes.”

“He faces the same repercussions as you do if he refuses to honor the contract. As for whether he is a kind man or not, I cannot say, for I have never met him. All I know of Prince Rhys is that he is two years older than you.”

Caden pulled out of his father’s embrace and laid his head on Titus’ back as a loud horn sounded in the distance. There was no more time for words; the prince had arrived.

Book Description:

What will it take for a dragon prince to defy his father and fly on his own?

Prince Jules, the least favorite of the Dragon King's children, lives simply, banished to his rooms and the amazing adventures found in his books. He has never left the palace or shifted into his dragon form…he's never done anything.

Dragon shifter Lem is assigned to Jules as the prince's new bodyguard, and is determined to keep Jules safe from the Graithen, who killed the prince’s previous guardian. Lem grows to hate how the King hides Jules away, and longs to show him how to fly. His love for Jules also grows but it is forbidden, like so much in Jules' life.

When the Graithen attack again, though, everything changes.

Review:

Considred the runt of the litter, Prince Jules is the least favourite and banished to his rooms and never allowed to leave them. His only friend and companion is his bodyguard, Mabon, and the only life Jules lives is through his books. He's a prisoner in the royal castle and everything that a normal shifter can do is forbidden for him. He isn't allowed to change form, he isn't allowed to fly and he isn't allowed to venture beyond his rooms or the small courtyard enclosing them.

When Mabon is killed in an attack by the Graithen, Jules despairs. He doesn't eat, he barely sleeps and he hardly ever ventures outside, into the warmth of the sun which his dragon needs.

Lem is assigned as his new bodyguard and gradually Lem takes Jules out of his shell, getting him to eat, to go outside and to get some much needed rest. The more Jules recovers, the more enamoured Lem becomes of him. But Jules is a royal, Lem is a commoner bodyguard. Love between them would not be allowed, much like everything else in Jules' life. There are no bars on Jules' gilded cage, but it is a cage nontheless and Lem yearns to break the prince free of it.

Soon it becomes clear that Jules is not the runt of the litter at all, but something much bigger and unique.

I have read a few Sean Michael books before and while those were more on the erotic/raunchy side, this one feels more romantic to me. Not that to say there isn't sex in it, it's a Sean Michael book, of course there's sex ;) but this one delves deeper into the emotions of the characters. Most of the book only features Lem and Jules, with scant appearances by a few side characters. It meant that the reader was feeling as isolated as those two were within the confines of the castle rooms and then later on in the mountain caves. This was most definitely a story of Lem and Jules, rather than a story of the world they inhabit.

I would have liked a bit more world-buliding and a bit more build-up to discovering what the strange markings on Jules' hands were. The explanation happened rather suddenly and it fell a bit flat. Some of the love scenes were so sweet they could make your teeth ache, with lots of endearments and promises of forever which I don't normally care for. But here I liked it, as it fitted these two characters and what they would say. Jules is very naive and inexperienced but Jules knew what he wanted and pursues Lem as much as Lem pursues him.

All in all, an enjoyable, romantic read.

Klockwerk Kraken

The KlockWerk Kraken cover (1)

Synopsis
When the right space pilot walks into his bar, a desperate bartender uses all his wiles (and tentacles) to talk the man into business and his bed--but the spacer is still enslaved by his past and isn't sure he can deal with a two-handed lover, much less one with six.

As the supply shipments stop coming, Teo Houdin needs all his tentacles to keep his waystation bar open. Facing a riot by thirsty miners stranded in the backwater of the galaxy, Teo helps a greenie space pilot buy a ship in return for a regular haul of liquor.

But he longs for the courage to invite the enigmatic spacer to fill his lonely bed as well. Still smarting from his newly implanted navigational ports, Jimenez knows owning his own ship will prevent him from ever being bought and sold again. For a former slave, transporting cargo through the emptiness of space sounds like paradise, but after meeting the compassionate and sexy Teo, his heart feels empty, too. At the edge of the galaxy's spiral arm, can Teo convince Jimenez that the heart has its own tentacles and theirs should be entwined forever?

 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H229qJVykQ0

Excerpt

Jimenez opened the bar’s airlock and the urge to run out again washed over him like a splash of cold water. He commanded his frozen legs to shuffle forward and inside. This could turn ugly if he lost his concentration for even a moment. But he wouldn’t. He’d been practicing, becoming accustomed to groups larger than this for revs now. He could be just like everyone else. None of them would see the scars on his back or the brand of his tattoo that had marked him since puberty.

Men and women filled half the tables and booths, some laughing and drinking, a few puffing blue smoke. The gaming tables on the side were empty, while a lone player at the billiard table opposite pocketed ball after ball. The room rang with loud voices, clinking glasses, and raucous music. Jimenez slid into an empty spot at the pale stone bar and caught sight of the clearest, happiest eyes he’d ever seen, a shade lighter than the man’s tousled brown mop above. A dimple quirked at the side of his full lips, mesmerizing Jimenez. The loud voices behind him slid away and for a moment, it was quiet in his mind. Jimenez flinched when his shoulder was jostled and the spell broke. “Hey, you okay, buddy? First time? What can I pour for you?”

Jimenez blinked, realizing the tall bartender was speaking to him. The man’s smiling eyes crinkled at the corners of his bronzed face. Jimenez swallowed, and he ducked his chin, trying not to stare again, trying to hide his hot cheeks. He’d never been so close to such a handsome man.

“Did you want a drink?” The bartender quirked an eyebrow.

“Yeah… I mean yes. Whiskey neat.” His voice came out gruffer than he expected.

“Bourbon, Scotch, Rye…?”

“Surprise me.” It was a game Jimenez played. He’d order whiskey and discover what the bartender served. If he reached for the rail bottle closest to hand, it meant he would pour either the cheapest or the local favorite. If he pulled something from the top shelf, the bartender angled for a bigger tip. But if he grabbed a decanter off to the side or behind another bottle, he’d score the bartender’s personal pick.

“Coming right up.” The bartender raised a tentacle in greeting, calling out to another patron. Oh, God. The man was a Pod. Of course he was. In a joint named the Klockwerk Kraken, who better to tend the bar than a tentacled man?

Hour of the Lotus

General Sho Iwata is devastated when the man he secretly loves, Prince Narita, is struck with a mysterious illness. Iwata's current lover, Hiroshi, is well aware of the general's unrequited passion. But that isn’t his biggest problem. His sister is Narita’s favourite consort, but Hiroshi believes she has been replaced by an imposter. When they discover the true cause of the illness, they will have to battle an ancient spirit and survive.

Fox Hunter

Lord General Iwata Sho sets out in search of the mysterious Fox Hunter. When he finds his former lover, Hiroshi, he discovers a changed man, scarred inside and out and consumed by vengeance. Together with Narita’s grown son Daigo, Iwata and Hiroshi pursue the malicious spirit as it leaves bloodshed in its wake. Iwata worries about what will become of Hiroshi when the fox is defeated—if Hiroshi’s revenge doesn’t kill him first.

Review:

I have to admit that I was drawn to this book by the beautiful cover of two Japanese samurai warriors, but it was the writing and the characters that made me stay drawn.

This book combines the two novellas Hour of the Lotus and Fox Hunter, but both go well together and could also stand on their own.

General Iwata has been in love with his Prince, Narita, but he also knows it will be forever unrequited, for Prince Narita loves only women. It's not overtly stated whether or not the prince knows about Iwata's love for him or not, but I think he probably does.

The prince is suffering from an unknown illness, something seems to be draining his life force and everyone in the palace is worried; from the wives and concubines to the soldiers in the Imperial army.

The prince's favourite concubine is a sister of Hiroshi, Iwata's current lover, which complicates matters somewhat. When Hiroshi insists that the woman purporting to be his sister is an imposter, Iwata believes him at once, for Hiroshi is not given to idle fancy.

The culprit is a kitsune - a fox shape-changer who has taken on the guise of the concubine in order to kill the prince.

The second book takes place eight years later, with Hiroshi having been gone those eight years trying to hunt down the fox and seek revenge.

I enjoy books that take you on a journey to undiscovered places and legends, and Late Summer, Early Spring, certainly does that. With vivid, lush descriptions, you can see, smell and hear everything the characters do. I also loved the names, such as the Nightingale Court for the wives and concubines. It conjured up something strange and exotic.

Hiroshi and Iwata are both troubled characters and you really feel for them. The love scenes are fade to black, but there is no doubt that the two of them are lovers and not just friends. Parts were bittersweet, but it was a wonderful story to get lost in for a few hours.

Perfect for fans of historical fantasy or paranormal stories.
